CHAPTER TWELVE

I Y L A

“Do you regret not living on residence?” I asked Ambert as I sat cross-legged on my bed and reached towards the French fries we’d grabbed from the dining hall.

“Partly.” He leaned his head back against the wall, his long legs dangling over the side of the bed. “But it makes more sense to live at home, especially when home is only fifteen minutes away. Although, some time away from my family can be nice.”

“I agree with that.” I chuckled, picking up another fry and placing it into my mouth. I loved my parents—deeply, for that matter. However, some separation had been refreshing, especially now that I could develop my relationship with Ambert without being bombarded by my parent’s natural interests.

“Are you okay?” I noticed a shift in Ambert’s expression as his forehead creased in concern.

“Yeah. It’s just…” His voice possessed a sense of anxiety. “I hope you don’t feel I’m jumping the gun on introducing you to my family. I told my mom and dad that it might be too early, but you know what parents can be like.”

“I mean, I’m a bit nervous.” I vocalized my concerns. “I want to meet your parents, I do. I just hope they like me.”

“Iyla.” He shot me a frustrated look. “What isn’t there to like?”

“I don’t know.” I shrugged. “I just get in my head about things sometimes. Like, what do they even know about me, for starters?”

He paused momentarily, scratching the back of his neck in thought. “I haven’t told them anything, really. My parents don’t even know your name.”

This time, I shot him a slightly frustrated look. What was the secrecy about? I hadn’t told my family about him either, but he wasn’t meeting them in a matter of days.

“Why wouldn’t you even tell them my name?” I probed.

He sighed. “I told my mom that you went to UCLA, but I was worried she’d look you up or something. I just told them that you’re someone who’s really special to me.”

My annoyance melted away instantly at his words. “I’m special to you?”

“Iyla.” He pulled his legs up from over the bed. “I’ve never met anyone quite like you.” His voice was gentle, reassuring, warm…honest. “That day when we met at Tim and Sally’s, I was just trying to be friendly. But boy, my world stopped when I saw you behind that wheel.”

“You didn’t seem nervous,” I noted, moving the fries off the bed and onto the floor as I scooted closer to him.

“Are you kidding?” He ran his hands through my hair. “I felt like I was so awkward.”

“Hey, I was the one stuttering like an idiot. Not to mention that my car died the second I tried to start it. How embarrassing was that?”

“It was fate,” he responded without an ounce of hesitation.

I couldn’t help but roll my eyes with a laugh. “You believe in that?” I challenged, although truthfully, I was unsure where I held my own beliefs on the subject matter.
