CHAPTER TWELVE
I Y L A
âDo you regret not living on residence?â I asked Ambert as I sat cross-legged on my bed and reached towards the French fries weâd grabbed from the dining hall.
âPartly.â He leaned his head back against the wall, his long legs dangling over the side of the bed. âBut it makes more sense to live at home, especially when home is only fifteen minutes away. Although, some time away from my family can be nice.â
âI agree with that.â I chuckled, picking up another fry and placing it into my mouth. I loved my parentsâdeeply, for that matter. However, some separation had been refreshing, especially now that I could develop my relationship with Ambert without being bombarded by my parentâs natural interests.
âAre you okay?â I noticed a shift in Ambertâs expression as his forehead creased in concern.
âYeah. Itâs justâ¦â His voice possessed a sense of anxiety. âI hope you donât feel Iâm jumping the gun on introducing you to my family. I told my mom and dad that it might be too early, but you know what parents can be like.â
âI mean, Iâm a bit nervous.â I vocalized my concerns. âI want to meet your parents, I do. I just hope they like me.â
âIyla.â He shot me a frustrated look. âWhat isnât there to like?â
âI donât know.â I shrugged. âI just get in my head about things sometimes. Like, what do they even know about me, for starters?â
He paused momentarily, scratching the back of his neck in thought. âI havenât told them anything, really. My parents donât even know your name.â
This time, I shot him a slightly frustrated look. What was the secrecy about? I hadnât told my family about him either, but he wasnât meeting them in a matter of days.
âWhy wouldnât you even tell them my name?â I probed.
He sighed. âI told my mom that you went to UCLA, but I was worried sheâd look you up or something. I just told them that youâre someone whoâs really special to me.â
My annoyance melted away instantly at his words. âIâm special to you?â
âIyla.â He pulled his legs up from over the bed. âIâve never met anyone quite like you.â His voice was gentle, reassuring, warmâ¦honest. âThat day when we met at Tim and Sallyâs, I was just trying to be friendly. But boy, my world stopped when I saw you behind that wheel.â
âYou didnât seem nervous,â I noted, moving the fries off the bed and onto the floor as I scooted closer to him.
âAre you kidding?â He ran his hands through my hair. âI felt like I was so awkward.â
âHey, I was the one stuttering like an idiot. Not to mention that my car died the second I tried to start it. How embarrassing was that?â
âIt was fate,â he responded without an ounce of hesitation.
I couldnât help but roll my eyes with a laugh. âYou believe in that?â I challenged, although truthfully, I was unsure where I held my own beliefs on the subject matter.
